Ericsson accelerates 5G momentum in India
Ericsson announced that it will showcase 5G use cases at the India Mobile Congress 2018. These 5G use cases have been developed with partners leveraging the Ericsson Center of Excellence and Innovation Hub at the IIT-Delhi.
Nitin Bansal, Managing Director- India and Head of Network Solutions, South East Asia and India at Ericsson states “Ericsson is working with telecom operators across the world to make 5G real. Here in India, we are already working towards creating a robust ecosystem to fast track 5G deployments. As part of the same endeavor, we will be showcasing a number of 5G use cases at India Mobile Congress starting tomorrow. We have collaborated with Indian telecom operators, other industry players and academia to bring these use cases to life.”
These 5G use cases are part of a series of initiatives being undertaken to accelerate the 5G momentum in the country. As per the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, there will be about 10 million 5G subscriptions in India by 2023. The report estimates that the monthly data usage per smartphone in India will increase from 5.7 GB in 2017 to 13.7 GB by 2023. The roll out of 5G networks will help address this massive growth in data traffic by enabling enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB). Studies indicate that eMBB enabled by 5G will help telecom operators reduce the cost/GB by nearly 10 times compared to today’s 4G networks.
5G will enable tremendous opportunities
As per an Ericsson report, 5G enabled digitization revenue potential in India will be US $27.3 billion by 2026. The Indian operators can generate additional revenue of US$ 13 Billion or half of the stated potential if they take up roles beyond being Connectivity and infrastructure providers to become service enablers and service creators. The largest opportunity will be seen in sectors like manufacturing, energy and utilities followed by public safety and health sectors. Some of the 5G use cases that could be implemented using the unique features of 5G technology include industrial control and automation, autonomous driving, safety and traffic efficiency services, hospital applications and medical data management amongst others.
Ericsson’s enhanced 5G platform to help Indian operators roll out 5G networks faster
Ericsson has expanded its end-to-end 5G Platform by adding new hardware and software products to the Ericsson Radio System portfolio, further enhancing the agility and speed with which Indian operators can roll out their 5G networks. Ericsson is also strengthening its end-to-end mobile transport solutions by building on its radio expertise and adding best-in-class transport technologies from Juniper Networks and ECI.
Ericsson has launched the RAN Compute portfolio, which responds to service provider’s need for greater flexibility in the deployment of Radio Access Network (RAN) software and hardware functions. RAN Compute is an architecture that allows service providers to flexibly distribute RAN functions – such as beamforming and radio control – where needed to fine-tune use case performance while also lowering total cost of ownership.
The company has also launched the new Ericsson Spectrum Sharing software, expanding the versatility of Ericsson Radio System for 5G deployments. This gives service providers a greater opportunity to turn on 5G and speed up network coverage.
Ericsson Spectrum Sharing enables a smooth and fast network migration through simultaneous and dynamic support of 4G and 5G within the same spectrum band using the Ericsson Radio System, once operators are ready to make the transition. The new functionality can be implemented through a remote software installation on Ericsson Radio System radios shipped since 2015.
This capability will allow service providers to deliver nationwide 5G coverage with a much more flexible spectrum migration strategy – removing the need for dedicating fixed spectrum assets to 5G and negatively impacting 4G performance. Ericsson’s Spectrum Sharing solution will enable operators to deliver a superior end-user experience in the most cost-efficient way.
Nitin Bansal states, “Operators will be able to manage their networks efficiently through a combination of 4G and 5G. Ericsson, with its portfolio of 5G ready Network solutions, is the partner of choice to help operators in India for their seamless migration from 4G to 5G.”
Ericsson has been a key figure in the 5G standardization process and moved quickly to ensure interoperability between Ericsson Radio System commercial radios and the 5G test devices of its ecosystem partners. These tests have been conducted on all the main spectrum bands that will be deployed during the initial 5G launches, including 3.5, 28 and 39 GHz.
David Hammarwall, Head of Product Line 5G RAN, Ericsson states “We are rapidly approaching a 5G commercial reality. Through a series of significant technology and interoperability achievements, Ericsson has opened 5G up for first movers, taking this technology out of the lab and into a commercial network environment.”
